An Alan Smithee Film: Burn Hollywood Burn   1997     1 star    R, 86 min.
Genre: Comedy
Director: Alan Smithee
Cast: Ryan O'Neal, Coolio, Chuck D., Richard Jeni, Eric Idle, Whoopi Goldberg, Jackie Chan, Sylvester Stallone, Leslie Stefanson, Harvey Weinstein

The title of this film reflects the custom in Hollywood of replacing a director's name with "Alan Smithee" if the director wants his name removed from a film's credits. In this story, the director's real name IS Alan Smithee, which presents more than a few problems.

Poster Art From art.comThe Associate   1996     2 and a half stars    PG-13, 114 min.
Genre: Comedy
Director: Donald Petrie
Cast: Whoopi Goldberg, Dianne Wiest, Eli Wallach, Tim Daly, Bebe Neuwirth, Austin Pendleton, Lainie Kazan, Donald Trump, Billy Jaye, Helen Hanft

Overtly based on the "Tootsie" premise, Whoopi Goldberg plays "Cutty"–a figment of Laurel's (also Goldberg) imagination. Disguised as a man, Laurel is able to gain respect as a financial analyst on Wall Street. Goldberg is funny, the cast is great, and while the story errs in the premise that women get no respect on Wall Street, it does provide good entertainment.

Genre: Family
Director: Penelope Spheeris
Cast: Travis Tedford, Bug Hall, Brittany Ashton Holmes, Kevin Jamal Woods, Jordan Warkol, Zachary Mabry, Ross Elliott Bagley, Mel Brooks, Whoopi Goldberg, Daryl Hannah

This 1994 version of the early 1930s' "Our Gang" films is filled with many of the same trappings of its predecessors. For example, the actors exhibit uncanny resemblances to their earlier prototypes including Spanky, Alfalfa, and Buckwheat. This time around, Alfalfa (Bug Hall) falls in love with Darla (Brittany Ashton Holmes), and that threatens what the "He-Man Woman Haters Club" stands for. To save the day, the gang plots ways to keep Alfalfa and Darla apart.    1 User Review
