Director: Sean Penn Cast: Emile Hirsch, William Hurt, Brian Dierker, Vince Vaughn, Hal Holbrook, Marcia Gay Harden, Jena Malone, Catherine Keener, Kristen Stewart, Zach Galifianakis, Haley Ramm, Merritt Wever
Based on Jon Krakauer's nonfiction story, this is the tale of troubled Christopher McCandless (Emile Hirsch) who, after graduating from Emory University, got rid of his possessions, donated his savings to charity, changed his name to Alexander Supertramp, and headed out on a journey through the American West. He eventually ended up living in an abandoned bus in the Alaskan wilderness, where he died of starvation four months after arriving in Alaska. The story is told in flashbacks after he arrives in Alaska, starting with his life at home. Emile resented his father's (William Hurt) materialism and his family's way of life. Heading west, he experienced several adventures, including kayaking down the Colorado River to Mexico, stopping at a homeless shelter, hopping on trains with the hoboes, and meeting assorted characters along the way. Narration of the saga is by Jena Malone who plays his sister in the film. Was Emile just seeking adventure, or was there a deeper problem within him? A good movie, though long. The film received two Academy Award nominations including Best Supporting Actor (Hal Holbrook).

| | I suppose you could, but why would you want to? | 1fatts 03/26/2007 | I remember a long magazine article about twenty years ago which detailed how progressive parents were teaching their six-month-old babies how to swim.
The best comment on this new athletic phenomenon came from some doctor or another who said: "I suppose you could, but why would you want to?"
You don't remake a masterpiece. You especially don't film the same shooting script word for word and shot by shot. Virtually everyone in this thing suffers by comparison. The best they could have hoped for was "a worthy homage". But it wasn't. |

Wild West Comedy Show: 30 Days & 30 Nights.... 2008 R, 100 min. Genre: Documentary / Comedy
Director: Ari Sandel Cast: Vince Vaughn, Ahmed Ahmed, John Caparulo, Bret Ernst, Sebastian Maniscalco, Jon Favreau, Dwight Yoakam, Peter Billingsley, Keir O'Donnell, Justin Long, Taylor Hackford, Buck Owens
[Full title: Wild West Comedy Show: 30 Days & 30 Nights - Hollywood to the Heartland] In the spirit of Buffalo Bill's traveling Wild West show, in 2005 Vince Vaughn put together his own touring show with comedy as the center-point rather than animals. Gathering four relatively unknown comedians (Ahmed Ahmed, John Caparulo, Bret Ernst, and Sebastian Maniscalco) and several of his friends, the show took off from Hollywood on a 6,000 mile trip to put on 30 shows in 30 days starting with California, then heading East through the southern states, and finally into the Midwest. The comic routines are great, and Vaughn, as host, pulls the show together with sketches and actor and musician guests. The troupe even had a scrape with Hurricane Katrina. This is an entertaining documentary that shows the highlights of the tour.
