Schoolmates from the past–actress Mary Keaton (Joan Blondell), high-society matron Vivian Revere (Ann Dvorak), and Ruth Westcott (Bette Davis)–meet at a restaurant and use one match to light their cigarettes. Over the next years, Vivian divorces Henry (Warren William), leaves her baby son with him, and marries gambler Mike (Lyle Talbot). Mary marries Henry, and Ruth works as the baby's governess. By now, Vivian is a drug addict and alcoholic and has become involved in a plot to kidnap her own son when her husband Mike hires "Harve the Mug" (Humphrey Bogart) to perform the kidnapping. During the kidnapping, both Vivian and her son are taken captive, but Vivian jumps out of a window, and the police rescue her son.
