  Set in the 1850s, this film is about a sea captain, Jonathan Clark (Gregory Peck), who illegally hunts seals. He falls in love with a beautiful Russian princess, the Countess Marina (Ann Blyth), while helping her flee from an arranged marriage to Prince Semyon (Carl Esmond). Now, Clark and the Countess are about to wed, but the Countess is kidnapped by Prince Semyon and taken to Alaska. After recovering from a drunken stupor, Clark races fellow seal hunter Portugee (Anthony Quinn) to Alaska, but they are both arrested by the Russians. In an effort to save them, Countess Marina says she will marry Semyon when he orders the release of Clark and Portugee.
