This delightful take-off of the tried-and-true Western has it all. James Garner is at his best as the handsome stranger James McCullough who is passing through a small town in the middle of a gold rush and is hired as the new sheriff. McCullough appoints town drunk Jake (Jack Elam) as his deputy and arrests Joe Danby (Bruce Dern). Now, the rest of the Danby gang–led by Pa Danby (Walter Brennan)–are determined to free Joe and rid the town of their new sheriff. And while all this is going on, McCullough is being pursued by the fair maiden Prudy Perkins (Joan Hackett) who is determined to marry the sheriff.
