When Bill learns that the farmer is terminally ill and that he has fallen in love with Abby, Bill convinces Abby to marry the farmer as the means of inheriting a fortune. But, plans go awry, and tragedy awaits. Beautifully photographed (and won an Oscar for Best Cinematography).

But, after reuniting with Ruth, Merrill agrees to testify despite problems with his conscience.
