This story is about Diane (Janet Gaynor), a Parisian waif who, after being exploited by her sister Nana (Gladys Brockwell), finds a life with Chico (Charles Farrell), a sewer worker. When World War I begins, Chico has fallen in love with Diane, but he is sent to the front. Diane gets a report that Chico has been killed, but the report is wrong, and Chico, now blind, finds his way back to Diane. This film won Best Actress (Gaynor), Director, and Screenplay Academy Award honors. This was the first year for the Oscars and covered a two-year period (1927-28).

Diane (Simone Simon) is exploited as a prostitute by her sister Nana (Gale Sondergaard) and then thrown out of the house. A Parisian sewer worker, Chico (James Stewart), rescues Diane, and she moves into his slum apartment. World War I breaks out just as Chico realizes that he is in love with Diane, but he is drafted and leaves for the front. Four years later, Chico, blinded during the war, returns to a loving Diane who is waiting for him.

Mathilde (Sandrine Kiberlain) appears to have a nice life–attentive husband, one child, nice Paris apartment, good job–but she has been depressed recently. She even has been shoplifting toys, until she meets a man who turns out to by a hypnotherapist. He seems to cure her, and the emphasis shifts to her husband (Vincent Lindon) who has trouble communicating with her. A good job by the two stars.
