An ambitious and ruthless newspaper editor (Broderick Crawford) is hired to turn a respected New York paper around. He does it by turning the paper into a tabloid, to the dismay of many. At a party to celebrate the success, the editor's wife, whom he had run out on several years before, shows up. After she threatens to blackmail him, he kills her and makes it look as if it was an accidental death. Now, two of the paper's reporters seek the truth. A very good, and gripping, tale.
