| | Widower and his kids move and start a new life. | Old Movie Buff 08/16/2010 | | Beautiful story about a 50-something widower (Walter Brennan) and his 4 kids starting over after the loss of the wife and mother. The family faces life-like scenarios of intra-family turmoil brought on as each child demonstrates the need for individual freedom within the conundrum of the tight-nit but growing family. Walter Brennan is the iron-willed father who, while running from the reality of his children's journey to adulthood and the eventual empty nest, is forcibly removed from his leadership position by a farm accident, leaving the children to make the tough decisions necessary to save the newly purchased farm. Challenges galore face the family, as neighbors and the 4-H step in to help. This movie is heartwarming and extraordinarily touching. |
| | Anonymous 09/28/2009 | | Remembering this movie was made in 1949, I was charmed by the picture of life as it used to be. Walter Brennan is a character you love to hate and love to love at the same time. Natalie Wood is as charming as ever and though the story line is a bit thin and the ending predictable, it is a feel good bit of fluff . Wlater Brennan and Natalie Wood are a good combination for the black and white cinema. |

| | Len 07/01/2010 | | I had the privilege of watching Stev and crew make the movie at Fort Ord California in May and June of 1963. I was assigned to the 12th Evac Hospital where the movie was made. I was due to be discharged and had a loose job assignment. What amazed me was the fact that he did not use hardly any make up. Also at the end of his work day he would clime in a new Ford Corba and burn all wheels leaving the set. I'm not a big car buff, but to see a Limited Edition in those days was something. After watching him, I became a lowal fan and had to own Triumph Motorcycles. I miss him. |
