  An introvert, Pinky Rose (Sissy Spacek), obtains employment in a nursing home where she becomes attached to co-worker Millie Lammoreaux (Shelley Duvall). The two women form a relationship with the very unhappy Willie Hart (Janice Rule), and the ensuing friendship forms the basis for this film's plot. Excellent performances.

  Dr. Ravic (Charles Boyer) is a German surgeon who has fled to Paris to escape the Nazis. Ravik falls in love with Joan Amadou (Ingrid Bergman) who is grieving over the sudden death of her lover. They become involved in a doomed love affair that hits a critical point on the day that war is declared between France and Germany.

  Neurologist Dr. Malcolm Sayer (Robin Williams) works in the chronic-care ward of a hospital in the Bronx where he gives the new drug L-DOPA to patient Leonard Lowe (Robert De Niro) who is in a semi-comatose state. The drug works, and Lowe is gradually awakened after 30 years. He experiences the wonder of life and love, and this success with L-DOPA encourages Sayer to administer the drug to his other patients. Oscar nominations included Best Picture and Actor (De Niro).

And throughout the investigation, Margo and Harry's developing, offbeat relationship is fun to watch.

This film is the first directorial effort of Elia Kazan. Dunn won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor, and Garner was presented an Honorary Oscar as Outstanding Child Actress.
