  This is the final entry in Marcel Pagnol's trilogy. (It was preceded by "Marius" (1931) and "Fanny" (1932).) Twenty years have passed since Fanny (Orane Demazis) and Honore Panisse (Fernand Charpin) were married. Now, as Panisse lies on his deathbed, he and his friend Cesar (Raimu) reminisce, and Panisse reflects on the fact that he has never told Fanny's son, Cesariot (Andre Fouche), that Marius (Fernand Charpin), not Panisse, is his biological father. After Panisse dies, Fanny tells Cesariot the truth, and, with that knowledge, Cesariot sets out on a search for Marius.

  Written while Hitler was beginning to make his move in Europe, this film examines the mindset of men involved in World War I and shows how the aristocratic backgrounds of French prisoner de Boldieu (Pierre Fresnay) and the German commandant of the prison camp, von Rauffenstein (Eric von Stroheim), contribute to them forming a bond that will have deadly consequences when they allow two French soldiers (Jean Gabin and Marcel Dalio) to escape. The negatives of the film survived, and the restored movie was released in 1999, complete with a new translation.
