When 12-year-old James (Trevor Morgan) crashes his bicycle into the fence surrounding an old Maine cottage, he is confronted by the owner, Maddy (Vanessa Redgrave), a cantankerous old recluse who is still mourning the death of her son who was killed in Vietnam. Coincidentally, James has suffered during the last two years since his mother's death. Despite objections from James' father (Ray Liotta), Maddy and James form a deep friendship during which Maddy teaches James how to listen for voices from the dead.
