  This suspenseful tale, first presented in Robin Cook's novel, explores the possibilities of scientists gone berserk. In this case, when too many patients reach a comatose state during surgery, Dr. Susan Wheeler (Genevieve Bujold) is concerned and investigates. Despite the fact that Dr. Harris (Richard Widmark), Dr. George (Rip Torn), and Susan's boyfriend Dr. Mark Bellows (Michael Douglas) object, Susan digs through the files. Clues lead to the discovery of illegal medical experiments at the Jefferson Institute involving the selling of organs to wealthy patients who need transplants.
