Matters reach new heights when Rhoda's classmate drowns while at a class picnic, and Christine becomes convinced that Rhoda was involved. Christine fears that Rhoda's problems stem from the fact that Christine, herself, is the daughter of a convicted murderess, and she fears that Rhoda is a "bad seed." Christine gives Rhoda barbiturates to end her life and then shoots herself. Christine dies but Rhoda survives–until she is hit by a bolt of lightening. Kelly received an Oscar nomination for Best Actress, and both McCormack and Eileen Heckart (for her role as a victim's mother) received Best Supporting Actress nominations.

After their baby died in infancy and she couldn't have more children, she decided to start the Children's Home, specializing in illegitimate children (a problem that had hurt her in the past). After her husband's death, Edna became a strong force in changing laws relevant to illegitimacy. The heavy melodrama won an Academy Award for Best Interior Set Decoration and was nominated for three others, including Best Picture and Actress.

  This musical proved so popular that two sequels were made: one in 1935 and another in 1937. Brad and Polly are in love, but Brad's wealthy family disapproves and will stop at nothing to break them up–but they fail, and the show goes on. Ginger Rogers sings "We're in the Money" while wearing only silver dollars in one of the great Busby Berkeley production numbers.

  This version of the Broadway musical production, based on the life of Louise "Gypsy Rose Lee" Hovick, stars Natalie Wood in the title role. June bails out leaving an unwilling Louise to do Mama Rose's bidding. Vaudeville is on the wane, but Louise does get a booking in a burlesque house where she finds stardom as stripper "Gypsy Rose Lee." Songs include "Everything's Coming Up Roses," "Let Me Entertain You," and "All I Need Is a Girl." The film received Academy Award nominations for Best Music, Cinematography, and Costume Design.

  One of MGM's biggest productions at the time, "Quo Vadis," stars Peter Ustinov as the Roman Emperor Nero. Robert Taylor plays the Roman warrior, Marcus Vinicius, who loves the beautiful Christian, Lygia (Deborah Kerr), but, at first, she wants nothing to do with a soldier. As time passes, Marcus converts to Christianity, and Lygia falls in love with him. Meanwhile, Nero's actions against the Christians becomes more violent as he burns Rome and then throws the Christians to the lions. Nero's former aide Petronius (Leo Genn) posthumously delivers the final insult to Nero. The film received eight Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture and two for Best Supporting Actor (Leo Genn and Peter Ustinov).

Over the next years, Vivian divorces Henry (Warren William), leaves her baby son with him, and marries gambler Mike (Lyle Talbot). Mary marries Henry, and Ruth works as the baby's governess. By now, Vivian is a drug addict and alcoholic and has become involved in a plot to kidnap her own son when her husband Mike hires "Harve the Mug" (Humphrey Bogart) to perform the kidnapping. During the kidnapping, both Vivian and her son are taken captive, but Vivian jumps out of a window, and the police rescue her son.
