Susanna works with her psychiatrist, Dr. Sonia Wick (Angelina Jolie), and is guided by nurse Valerie (Whoopie Goldberg). Susanna leaves friends behind when she reclaims her independence and moves out of the institution and on with her life. Jolie won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress.

On the long car trip south, Stanley and the girls become closer despite the fact that Stanley knows that the time is coming when he must tell the girls about their mother.
