Now, here's an interesting twist to Robert Louis Stevenson's tale. Dr. Jekyll (Ralph Bates) is looking for the elixir that will wipe out all diseases; instead, he comes up with a formula that turns him into the beautiful, but evil, woman Sister Hyde (Martine Beswick). Because female hormones are needed for the experiment, prostitutes are lured to their deaths. Finally, Dr. Jekyll tries to fight off the ever increasing dominance of Sister Hyde, but his efforts may be too late. A good performance by Beswick–and she even looks somewhat like Bates.

Trancers II   1991     1 star    R, 87 min.
Genre: Sci-Fi
Director: Charles Band
Cast: Tim Thomerson, Helen Hunt, Megan Ward, Biff Manard, Martine Beswick, Jeffrey Combs, Alyson Croft, Telma Hopkins, Art LaFleur, Barbara Crampton

OK–the original, though cheap, was fun. But this one can't get away with the low production values (as they say) without comment. Jack (Tim Thomerson) got stuck in the past (now, 1991) after dealing with the Trancer problem in 1985. He is married to Lena (Helen Hunt) and another Trancer threat emerges, led by Whistler's (from the original) brother. To help Jack out, the 23rd-century council sends his wife back from the future. And you think he had problems before.

Wide Sargasso Sea   1993     2 and a half stars    NC-17, 100 min.

Director: John Duigan
Cast: Karina Lombard, Nathaniel Parker, Rachel Ward, Michael York, Martine Beswick, Claudia Robinson, Huw Christie Williams, Casey Berna, Rowena King, Ben Thomas, Paul(2) Campbell, Audbrey Pilatus, Ancile Gloudon, Dominic Needham, Kevin Thomas

Based on Jean Rhys' best-seller–a book intended as a prequel to Emily Bronte's "Jane Eyre"–the story, set in 1840s' Jamaica, starts with plantation owner Annette (Rachel Ward) marrying rich, mean-spirited, sexist Paul (Michael York) in order to save her land. After their mansion burns down, Paul leaves, Annette goes insane, and daughter Antoinette (Karina Lombard) is placed in a convent. Antoinette eventually marries a "proper" Englishman, Edward (Nathaniel Parker), in order to inherit the family land. But Antoinette's secrets and Edward's elitism and fear of black magic, which is prevalent in the area, brings more tragedy to the family.
