Martians in flying saucers invade Lockjaw, Kentucky; Washington, D.C.; and Nevada. President Dale's (Jack Nicholson) science advisor, Prof. Donald Kessler (Pierce Brosnan), tells him the purpose of their arrival is peaceful.. But, General Decker (Rod Steiger) advises the President to annihilate them. Meanwhile, the aliens are actually in the process of "vaporizing" Earth's inhabitants with their ray-guns while President Dale and Nevada land speculator Art Land (also played by Nicholson) rise and fall with the occasion.
