Conflicts concerning Tolson's efforts to help migrant farm workers rise to the fore, but, in the end, lessons are learned, and the debate team members learn to believe in themselves.

U.S. Army Sgt. Johnny Gallagher (Gene Hackman) is escorting his prisoner, Boyette (Tommy Lee Jones), from Germany to Washington, D.C. when Gallagher is mugged in a washroom at the airport. Boyette escapes, and Gallagher tries to track him down. In the process, Gallagher learns that Boyette is a pawn being used by senior military officers to prevent an arms control treaty between the U.S. and the U.S.S.R., and Soviet Col. Glen Whitacre (John Heard) wants to stop Gallagher before he ruins the plot. The ensuing twists and turns of events are thrilling.

Even the Lutheran Minister Sorrensen (John Heard) refused to marry them. These and other trials and tribulations of immigration rise to the fore, but as time passes the love story of Inge and Olaf ends happily.
