  Mac Brewster (Jack Benny) owns an advertising agency and tries to please his biggest client Alan Townsend (Richard Arlen) whose company is Townsend Silver. As chairman of the Artists and Models Ball, Mac tells Townsend that he will fix the contest for the next queen and name his girlfriend Paula Sewell (Ida Lupino) the Townsend Silver Queen. But, Paula is not a socialite, and her solution is to pretend to be an "upper-cruster" so that she can enter the contest. Louis Armstrong's orchestra, Andre Kostelanetz and his orchestra, cyclers, jugglers, tumblers, etc., all make for an overall fun movie.

  In this film, based on George Barr McCutcheon's novel, a World War II veteran Monty Brewster (Dennis O'Keefe) arrives home and learns that he has inherited one million dollars–the catch is he must spend it all within two months or he will not receive the rest of his inheritance. Another stipulation is that he cannot tell anyone about the inheritance. Brewster goes on a spending spree putting his money into bad investments, all of which turn into surprising profits. In the midst of his frenzy to spend the money, personal problems arise when he must postpone his wedding to Peggy (Helen Walker) but cannot tell her why.   District Attorney Jim Stowell (Warren William) has earned his reputation as a ruthless man who believes that execution should be the only sentence for first-degree murderers. While prosecuting Professor Shaw McAllen (Ralph Morgan) who is accused of murdering his wife, Stowell realizes that events in his own married life with his wife Lucy (Gail Patrick) closely parallel those of McAllen and his murdered wife. Compassion takes over as Stowell reflects on the circumstances and reasons that the death penalty may not always be the correct sentence.
