Alice Adams (Katharine Hepburn) believes in upward mobility (socially at least) as she tries to step from the lower-middle-class surroundings of her parents (Fred Stone and Ann Shoemaker) into the upper-class world. After meeting affluent Arthur Russell (Fred MacMurray) who, believing that her family is wealthy, is attracted to her, Alice invites Arthur to her parents home for a dinner party. The dinner proves to be a disaster and is made even more so when her parents hire Malena Burns (Hattie McDaniel) to serve as their dinner maid for the party, and she arrives drunk. The film received Academy Award nominations for Best Picture and Actress (Hepburn).    1 User Review
