The commander is Quincannon (John Ridgely), and the crew, among others, includes Sgt. White (Harry Carey), Gunnery Sgt. Joe Winocki (John Garfield), and Weinberg (George Tobias). The squadron flies into the middle of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, and then on to Wake Island on their way to the Philippines where they fight the Japanese invasion force. This film won the Academy Award for Best Film Editing and was nominated for Best Original Screenplay, Cinematography, and Special Effects.

During World War II, Jean Picard (Errol Flynn) is a Frenchman destined for the guillotine when the prison is bombed by the R.A.F. While searching for resistance saboteurs, the Nazis capture French hostages and threaten their deaths if the saboteur does not reveal himself. Jean poses as the saboteur and sacrifices himself to save Marianne and the other hostages and, in the process, help the cause of the Allies.
