Many of Paul's friends are killed in battle, and after Paul stabs and kills a French soldier, he is convinced that fighting a war is not the patriotic game he believed it was. The film received seven Emmy nominations, including Best Supporting Actor and Actress (Borgnine and Patricia Neal for her role as Paul's mother).

One of Smith's henchmen, Coley Trimble (Ernest Borgnine), has followed Macreedy to Komoto's home, and now Macreedy must not only deal with the cover-ups by the townsfolk, but he will be fighting for his own life as well. Spencer Tracy and Director John Sturges received Oscar nominations.
