| | Memorable and Timely | Anonymous 09/20/2007 | | An outstanding performance by McQueen in this classic story in which one person has the courage to stand against evil regardless of others who choose to cower and criticize. Ibsen and McQueen clearly demonstrate once again that one person can change the world while also demonstrating the real danger of sometimes having that courage of conviction. I saw this sadly-unrecognized film in the late 1970s and it has "haunted" me ever since. I dearly wish it were available on DVD to view over and over and over. |

His mother wants him to start dating, but Harold is busy attending funerals and has no time for women in his life. While attending a funeral, Harold meets and then falls in love with swinging, life-loving 79-year-old Maude (Ruth Gordon)–much to the disgust of his mother. But, as Harold passes into manhood, Maude teaches him lessons about how best to spend his time on Earth. Good soundtrack by Cat Stevens.
