Joel McCrea is the fourth actor to play the lead role in this story of the good guy, the Eastern schoolteacher, the friend-gone-bad, and the villain (Brian Donlevy). OK; saved by Donlevy, who always makes a good villain.

Academy Award nominations included Best Picture, Director, and Supporting Actor (William Bendix).
