This is a delightful (and faithful) rendition of Oscar Wilde's amusing satire on 1890s' social scene. Jack Worthing (Michael Redgrave) and Algernon Moncrieff (Michael Denison) are bachelors of means. Each has a girlfriend, and each goes by the pseudonym of Ernest since the women like that name. When the men become enamored with each others' girlfriends, the fun gets even better.

This is a clever film made up of a trio of stories linking together subsequent owners of a particular yellow Rolls-Royce Phantom II. Lord Frenton (Rex Harrison) buys the Rolls as an anniversary gift for his wife (Jeanne Moreau) who is later caught in the back seat with John Fane (Edmund Purdom). Later, in the 1930s, gangster Paolo Maltese (George C. Scott) buys the Rolls and tours Italy with hat-check girl Mae Jenkins (Shirley MacLaine). Like her predecessor, Mae also tries out the back seat–she finds "love" with a photographer (Alain Delon) while Paolo is in the U.S. on business. By World War II, socialite Gerda Millett (Ingrid Bergman) owns the car and fights the Nazis by smuggling Davich (Omar Sharif) across the border. In the process, this couple also finds pleasures in the back seat of the Rolls-Royce Phantom II.
