  In this modern version of the Faust legend, Joseph Foster (Thomas Mitchell) makes a deal with the Devil (Ray Milland) and is ultimately elected governor. As in the original story, ill-begotten success does not bring happiness, and Foster tries to renege on his evil bargain.
